How to schedule Guizhou's Wanfenglin and Malingshe in two days without feeling rushed
Last month, I took Mr. Chen's family from Singapore on a trip to Southwest Guizhou. Upon landing at Xingyi Wanfenglin Airport in the afternoon, they headed straight into Wanfenglin. Standing on the midway viewpoint, Mrs. Chen looked out at over 20,000 conical peaks stretching to the horizon and turned back to say, "It's far more stunning than the photos." The next day at Maoling River, her daughter ran through the bottom of the Huanglong Waterfall in a raincoat, soaking wet but still laughing.
Both attractions are in Xingyi, just a 10-minute drive from the city center. Many overseas Chinese visiting Guizhou only stop at Huangguoshu and Xijiang, missing Qianxinan entirely. After ten years of operating ground tours in Guizhou, we're breaking down everything you need to know for a two-day, one-night trip: the itinerary, ticket prices, and common pitfalls to avoid.
What's the most efficient way to do a 2-day, 1-night trip?
Day 1 afternoon: Head straight to Wanfenglin. Peak season ticket 70, shuttle bus 50. Follow the mid-mountain loop, passing General Peak, Bagua Fields, Stars Surrounding the Moon, and the Six-Six-Admirable Peak viewpoint. No backtracking; complete in 2.5 hours.
Don't rush down the mountain; Nahui Village is right below. Rent an e-bike and ride through the rice paddies. In about 30 hours, you can explore both Upper and Lower Nahui. At dusk, stop at the village entrance for egg fried rice from the restaurant featured on "A Bite of China" — just 8 yuan per bowl, paired with freshly ground soy milk. Stay in a homestay at the foot of the peak forest: 200–300 RMB off-season, 300–400 RMB during peak season. Open your window to see the stunning karst peaks.
Wake up early on Day 2 to catch the sunrise. The mist at 7:30 AM creates the best lighting. After breakfast, check out and head to Maling River (20-minute drive).
Peak season admission to Maling River is 70 CNY. The sightseeing elevator costs 30 CNY one-way or 40 CNY round-trip. We recommend entering via the Dachaiwo entrance, taking the elevator down to the valley floor, and following the East Trail through the Water Curtain Cave and Ditan, crossing the Double Rainbow Bridge to switch to the West Trail. Continue past the Galloping Horses Waterfall and Yellow Dragon Waterfall, then take the elevator up to Xiaoqingshan for exit. The full route covers approximately 9 kilometers and takes about two hours—easy and enjoyable.

MeituShuo ReminderThe bottom of Malingshan Valley is notoriously slippery. The water splashing from the waterfalls mixes with calcium deposits, making the surface extremely slick. Be sure to wear anti-slip sandals or athletic shoes; do not wear flip-flops. Disposable raincoats are sold at the park entrance for $5 each. If you don't wear one, you'll get soaked on the Huanglong Waterfall section.
3 pitfalls only insiders know
Avoid These PitfallsFor the best lighting on Wanfenglin sightseeing tours, head up after 4:00 PM. However, ticket sales stop at 4:30 PM during peak season, so don't arrive right at the cutoff. We usually enter the mountain around 3:30 PM, watch the sunset, and then have dinner upon returning.
Avoid These PitfallsMany visitors take the shortcut via the West Line at Malings River, viewing the "Ten Thousand Horses Galloping" scene before heading back. However, the East Line is the true highlight: pass through a water curtain cave and descend to the valley floor where the water is so clear you can see small fish. Completing the loop trail is well worth the ticket price.
MeituShuo ReminderThe Malenghe Canyon Bridge offers a free panoramic view of the canyon, located near the Dachaiwo entrance. Do not navigate to "Malenghe Bridge," as that is a different bridge 800 meters away. Capture a full panorama from the bridge before descending into the valley; the awe-inspiring experience differs greatly between this bird's-eye view and being down in the canyon itself.
Third, August is the peak water season for Malingshan River. While the waterfalls are at their most spectacular, rafting may be temporarily suspended due to high water levels. To enjoy "China's No. 1 Rafting," please confirm with us a day in advance whether it will be open that day to avoid an unnecessary trip.
What's the most convenient way to get to Xingyi?

Xingyi Wanfenglin Airport is the most hassle-free choice. Located just 7 km from Wanfenglin, it's a 20-minute taxi ride away. Direct flights connect to Guiyang, Kunming, Chengdu, and Chongqing. Travelers returning from the U.S. or Singapore typically transfer via Kuala Lumpur or Guangzhou to Guiyang, then take a 40-minute flight to Xingyi.
If direct flights to Xingyi aren't available, take the high-speed train to Panzhou Station and transfer. The drive from Panzhou to Xingyi takes about 1.5 hours. We offer a private pickup service in a 7-seater business van for $400–$500 one way.
In Xingyi, rides between attractions cost 20–30 CNY. For families with elderly or young children, or if you want to stay overnight in Wanfenglin and explore at a relaxed pace, a private car is more convenient. During peak season, five-seater sedans are 600–800 CNY/day; seven-seater vans are 800–1,000 CNY/day. Rates include fuel, tolls, and driver accommodation/meals. The driver does not enter scenic spots and will pick you up at your scheduled time.
End
Wanfenglin showcases grandeur with 20,000 peaks stretching to the horizon; Malingshe River offers surprises where waterfalls fill your view from the valley floor, sending a cool mist right onto your face. Two days and one night is just right—no rush, no fatigue. In August, Xingyi averages a pleasant 22°C, a few degrees cooler than Guiyang. Perfect for escaping the heat. Worth the trip.
