First time traveling to Guizhou with your baby? Read this before you go.
Last week, Mr. Chen from San Francisco, US, reached out to plan a summer trip back to Guizhou with his two daughters (7 and 4 years old). Having never traveled far with such young children, he asked many questions: "What should we pack? What if the kids can't handle spicy food?"
We've been operating ground services in Guizhou for 10 years and have hosted many families returning from abroad with their children. Family-friendly travel in Guizhou beats many other provinces: cool summers, stunning landscapes, and a relaxed pace. But preparation before you depart matters—forgetting essentials can leave you stranded. We've compiled our hard-learned lessons so you can pack with confidence.

Documents and materials
Families returning from abroad often overlook travel documents. While adults' passports are usually fine, children born overseas may use a Travel Document or Chinese passport with different validity periods. Be sure to check these before departure.
When traveling with children, carry a copy of the birth certificate. Hotels may occasionally require proof of parent-child relationship, especially if Chinese names on documents don't match.
MeituShuo ReminderDuring the summer vacation, attractions like Huangguoshu and Xiaoqikong require advance online reservations. Even children eligible for free admission must be registered; without a reservation, entry is denied at the site. We've seen several families miss out because of this.
Clothing and shoes
In Guiyang, daytime temperatures in summer range from 28 to 32 degrees. However, there is a significant temperature difference between the mountains and the city center. The mist at the base of Huangguoshu Waterfall creates a cool feeling of around 5 degrees; Libo Xiaoqikong feels hot and humid; bring a light jacket for evenings in Xijiang Miao Village.
Packing tips for kids: 3 to 4 sets of short-sleeve shirts and shorts, 1 pairs of lightweight long pants, 1 light jackets, 1 pairs of non-slip sneakers (the village has many stone-paved paths; sandals can easily cause ankle twists), and 1 pairs of flip-flops (for wading at Xiaoqikong).
Avoid These PitfallsDon't wear new shoes. The stone-paved paths and stairs at scenic spots can cause blisters within two days if the shoes aren't broken in. Old sneakers are the safest choice.
Medications and Mosquito Repellents
Guizhou summers have lots of mosquitoes, especially around water in Libo and Miao villages—a single bite can swell for three days. Bring a DEET-based repellent (concentration 10% to 30%); it works better than buying one on-site. Mosquito repellents at scenic spot convenience stores are often ineffective.
Pack basic medications: fever reducers, anti-diarrheal medicine, bandages, and motion sickness patches. Guizhou's mountain roads are full of sharp turns; it takes 2.5 hours to get from Guiyang to Huangguoshu and 3 hours to Xiaoqikong. Even children who don't usually get carsick may feel unwell.
MeituShuo ReminderIf your child is allergic to Houttuynia (fish mint), be aware that it's common in Guizhou's cold dishes and dipping sauces. Always specify "no fish mint" when ordering. The strong flavor may be too intense for children, even if adults enjoy it.
Food issues
Guizhou cuisine is typically spicy, which worries many parents. But don't worry—Sour Soup Fish can be made with a mild white broth, and the Miao Long Table Banquet offers non-spicy dishes like sticky rice, cured pork, and steamed eggs. When we run family tours, we always ask restaurants in advance to prepare two mild dishes for children. Local staff are always happy to accommodate.
Avoid These PitfallsEel grass (Zhe'ergen) is a staple of street food in Guiyang. It's often found in dipping sauces for Siwawa and Tofu Balls. If you're unsure, just ask the vendor.

Itinerary Pace and Private Car Charter
Families returning from abroad often try to cram everything in, visiting 4 attractions over 5 days. If you're traveling with kids, we recommend limiting it to 3 core sites max over 5 days—one per day—to avoid rushing.
Skip sightseeing on Day 1 in Guiyang to let your child acclimate. Guiyang is at an altitude of 1100 meters; flying in from the coast often causes drowsiness on arrival day.
For private car rentals, families of 4 to 5 can choose a 7-seater business van. During summer vacation, rates range from 800 to 1000 per day, including the driver, fuel, and tolls. Self-driving is not recommended—Guizhou's mountain roads have many sharp curves, foreign licenses aren't directly valid, and frequent stops are needed when traveling with children. Driving yourself creates excessive stress.
